Jaycees, Vitalant prepare for blood drive in Hattiesburg

As the need for blood donations remains high, the Hattiesburg Jaycees are preparing for the annual Labor of Love Blood Drive on August 28th from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. at Vitalant, located at 805 South 28th Avenue in Hattiesburg. Vitalant and the Jaycees will follow all social distancing measures, officials said. Donors are asked to wear masks during the blood drive, officials added. Bulls, Bands and Barrels cancels 2020 event in Forrest Co.

Due to the increase of positive COVID-19 cases plus the Forrest County Board of Supervisors' decision to close the Forrest County Multipurpose Center this month, officials with Bulls, Bands and Barrels have canceled this year's event -- scheduled for August 22. “We did not enter into this decision lightly,” Bulls, Bands and Barrels President Hunter Price said in a statement to FOX23. “However, we must put the safety of our fans first. Southern Miss changes football schedule

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Department of Athletics announced Thursday that the Golden Eagle football team will move its season opener up two days, while also adding a pair of home 2020 contests to replace the two games that were canceled last month. Southern Miss will now open its season, Thursday, Sept. 3, against South Alabama, at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium. Game time will be 7 p.m., and marks the first meeting in football between the schools. HPSD delays first day of school until Aug. 17

The Hattiesburg Public School District tells FOX23 News the start of the 2020-2021 academic year has been postponed until August 17th. The HPSD provided the following information explaining Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the restart and recovery Plan: • Phase 1 (August 17th - September 4th): All schools will return using online virtual/distance learning as the form of instruction for all students grades Pre-K - 12. • Phase 2 (September 8th - October 19th): Schools will begin in-person hybrid instruction for students on alternating assigned days according to a student's last name. State health officer issues order for isolation of COVID-19 patients

JACKSON, Miss. – Today State Health Officer Thomas Dobbs MD, MPH, issued a statewide order for the Isolation of Individuals Diagnosed with COVID-19 effective immediately. The Order – issued to everyone living in Mississippi – stipulates that anyone diagnosed with COVID-19 must immediately isolate at home.
