Jones Co, MS - Fog was likely the cause of five vehicles colliding in two separate accidents on Highway 84 East in Jones County early Tuesday morning, March 3.
At 5:48 a.m., emergency medical responders and rescue units from M&M, Powers, and Rustin Volunteer Fire Departments were dispatched to Highway 84 East near Masonite Lake Road to the report of two separate vehicle accidents in the west bound lane of the highway. Upon arrival they found where two vehicles had collided across from Lake Covenant Methodist Church, and three other vehicles had collided further back near Masonite Lake Road, blocking the right hand lane of Highway 84 East.
Honda Accord and tractor-trailer truck
According to officials on scene the first accident apparently occurred when a Honda Accord ran into an empty Sanderson Farms live-haul tractor-trailer truck which was turning onto a private road leading to a poultry farmer’s chicken houses. The second accident involved three vehicles that ran into each other approximately 150 yards behind the first wreck as traffic was slowing.
The driver of the Honda Accord was transported to South Central Regional Medical Center by EMServ Ambulance Service with what was believed to be minor injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer truck was uninjured. The occupants of the other three vehicles were also uninjured.

Traffic was backed up for over a mile while rescue and vehicle operations were performed. Eventually one lane was opened, allowing traffic to slowly flow through, and after approximately one hour and a half the entire roadway was opened.
Also responding to the accident were Mississippi Highway Patrol, and Jones County Sheriff’s Department.
