MDOT Crews to Conduct 25th Annual “Trash Bash” Event

April 6, 2015

Hattiesburg, MS —

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has rescheduled its Trash Bash event for Wednesday, April 8 to take place in Jones, Wayne, and Clarke Counties due to expected inclement weather on Tuesday.

Approximately 300 MDOT employees from across District Six in South Mississippi will begin the clean-up operation at 8:00 in the morning Tuesday and continue for several hours throughout the day.  Workers will be assigned locations along 125 miles of the following highways:

  • Highway 84— Jones and Wayne Counties
  • Highway 45— Clarke and Wayne Counties
  • Highway 590— Jones County
  • Highway 57— Wayne County

“This high-impact Trash Bash event demonstrates true commitment on the part of MDOT employees to make a true difference,” said Commissioner Tom King.  “For District Six, this year’s highway clean-up operation will be held in Jones, Wayne and Clarke Counties.  We hope that this event inspires everyone to appreciate the beauty of our state and properly dispose of trash both here in South Mississippi and state-wide.”

Motorists are urged to watch out for workers who will be stationed along the designated clean-up routes. In the event of inclement weather, the Trash Bash will be postponed to a later date.

Trash Bash is MDOT’s contribution to the 2015 Great American Cleanup, a year-long campaign presented by “Keep America Beautiful”.  Each year the organization brings together millions of volunteers, in thousands of communities across the country, to clean up public land along roadways, host recycling drives, spruce up local parks and playgrounds, and plant trees.

Last spring, nearly two thousand MDOT volunteers picked up more than 5,000 bags of trash across Mississippi highways.   In District Six in South Mississippi, volunteers collected more nearly 500 bags of trash at last year’s event.
