Mississippi's Second West Nile Virus Case Confirmed
The state's second human case of West Nile virus (WNV) infection for 2015 has been confirmed in an Adams County resident. Peak season for West Nile virus is now, with the greatest number of cases reported between July and September. WNV infections usually cause mild flu-like symptoms, or no symptoms at all, but in some cases illness can be severe and long-lasting, or lead to encephalitis, paralysis and death. All Mississippians should take the following precautions:
Use a recommended mosquito repellent that contains DEET while you are outdoors.
Remove all sources of standing water around your home and yard to prevent mosquito breeding.
Wear loose, light-colored, long clothing to cover the arms and legs when outdoors.
Avoid areas where mosquitoes are prevalent.
