BOONEVILLE – Northwest Mississippi defeated Jones County 118-112 in overtime here Monday evening at the Bonner Arnold Coliseum on the campus of Northeast Mississippi Community College.
The Lady Rangers trailed for most of the game, but went ahead with 3:44 left when Kelsey Brown made a 3-pointer to make it 89-88.
Northwest was up 103-100, but JCJC’s Tatyana Lofton hit a 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
The Lady Bobcats jumped out to a 110-105 lead with 3:20 left in overtime when Hanah Lott made a free throw. But Northwest hit consecutive 3-pointers to go ahead 111-110.
Wendion Bibbins then hit a jump shot to give the Lady Bobcats a 112-111 lead with 1:39 remaining. But JCJC would not score again.
JCJC led 25-24 after the first quarter and 54-43 at halftime.
The Lady Bobcats’ longest lead was 74-55 with 2:42 left in the third quarter when Lofton made a free throw.
JCJC was led by Bibbins, a sophomore from New Orleans, who had 28 points and 15 rebounds. Lofton finished with 24 points and six rebounds. Hanah Lott had 17 points, while Myyah West added 13.
Bibbins and Lofton each had five assists.
Northwest’s Brianna Williams had a game-high 31 points and 11 rebounds. Averyale Joy had 23, Janesha Johnson had 22, Kelsey Brown had 21 and Sara Lytle had 15.
JCJC was 42-of-95 from the floor for 44.2 percent, while the Lady Rangers were 34-of-83 for 41 percent.
Northwest shot a lot of 3-pointers, going 15-of-41 for 36.6 percent. JCJC was 6-of-23 for 26.1 percent.
The Lady Rangers were also 35-of-41 from the free throw line for 85.4 percent, while JCJC was 22-of-28 for 78.6 percent.
JCJC outrebounded Northwest, 63-49.
The game was the season opener for both teams.
The Lady Bobcats continue play Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Northeast Mississippi Tipoff Classic vs. the host Lady Tigers.
