Lady Bobcats beat Southwest

Summit, Miss.  – The Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats needed a bigtime performance against Southwest Mississippi.

 

And the Lady Bobcats delivered in fine fashion with a 71-66 victory over the Lady Bears here Monday night at the Southwest Basketball Center.

 

The Lady Bobcats are now 17-5 overall and 10-3 in the MACJC South Division. They will be the second seed out of the division if they can defeat Hinds on Thursday.

 

Tatyana Lofton, Hanah Lott and Wendion Bibbins proved to be a highly effective ‘triple threat’ combining for 64 of JCJC’s points.

 

Lofton had 28, Lott had 20 and Bibbins finished with 16.

 

JCJC trailed 22-21 after the first quarter and 39-37 at halftime.

 

But the Lady Bobcats would take a 58-53 lead after three quarters and would lead by as many as seven points in the final period.

 

The game was close throughout. It was tied 11 times and there were 11 lead changes.

JCJC was 27-of-63 from the floor (6-of-16 from 3-point range) for 43 percent. The Lady Bobcats were 11-of-13 from the free throw line.

 

Bibbins and Lofton had eight rebounds each, while Aliyah Bell had seven. Lofton and Ashailee Brailey and Lofton each had four assists.

 

Southwest, 17-5 overall and 9-4 in the division, got 16 points from Alissa Adam, 14 from Lillie Snowden and 13 each from Teisha Jones and Gabby Cortez.

 

The Lady Bears were 22-of-56 from the field (8-of-23 from 3-point range) for 39 percent. Southwest was 14-of-16 from the foul line.

 

JCJC outrebounded Southwest, 36-28.

 

The Lady Bobcats will host Hinds in the final regular season game of the year at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The game will air on www.jcjc.tv. It will be “Sophomore Night” at A.B. Howard Gymnasium as the women and men’s sophomores will be recognized that evening.

 

Southwest travels to East Central on Thursday.

 

Both JCJC and Southwest will compete in the MACJC Tournament next week at Itawamba Community College in Fulton.

 

East Central clinched the South Division with an overtime win over Pearl River on Monday. The Lady Warriors are 12-1, while JCJC and Copiah-Lincoln are tied for second at 10-3. Southwest is fourth at 9-4.
