Tips to avoid scams

LAUREL, Miss. - The “Grandparents Scam" has been making its way through Laurel, but it isn't the first time it has happened in the area.
Laurel Police Officer, Cpt. Tommy Cox said, "Generally it's a real good idea anytime you receive a call where they say wire money or green dot credit card to be skeptical. You need to independently get a telephone number. Do not call one that the people give you over the phone. And verify if you're interested, if you think you need to follow up on it."
"Generally a lot of this stuff is coming from outside of the country. People who call would describe a heavily accented individual, said Cox."
Cox said no one has fell for the "Grandparents Scam" so far, but he has been receiving multiple calls a week about other various scams in the area.
