Term limits initiative won't appear on Mississippi ballot

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A political group has fallen short trying to get a term limits initiative on the Mississippi ballot.

The Secretary of State's office spokeswoman, Anna Moak, said Monday that United Conservatives Fund missed Wednesday's deadline to submit petitions.

The political action committee proposed limiting legislators and statewide office holders to two consecutive, four-year terms.

The group's director is Republican state Sen. Chris McDaniel of Ellisville, who lost a U.S. Senate race in 2014. The term limits effort started the same year McDaniel won a third term in the Legislature.

Organizers had one year to get petitions signed by 107,200 registered voters.

The initiative's sponsor, political consultant Keith Plunkett of Flora, estimated Monday that volunteers got 30,000 to 40,000 signatures.

Mississippians defeated term limits initiatives on the 1995 and 1999 ballots.
