Jones co. volunteer firefighters respond to 1 house fire and 2 wrecks within minutes

June 24, 2016

JONES COUNTY, Miss. - This is a press release from the Jones County Volunteer Fire Department.

Soso Volunteer Fire Department and other departments in the area were extremely busy Thursday afternoon when a string of calls came through one after another. Initially, Soso, Hebron and Calhoun Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the call of a structure fire on Andy Knight Road in the Soso community.

The structure, according to reports, was unoccupied at the time of the blaze and firefighters were able to quickly bring the fire under control. Soon after arriving on scene at the structure fire, another call came through for a one vehicle accident on Highway 29 just south of Soso.

Several units that were on scene at the fire responded to the vehicle accident. No injuries were reported in the accident.

Within minutes of receiving the call for the one vehicle accident, Soso Volunteer Fire Department was again dispatched to a two vehicle accident on Highway 28 West. Several units en route to the one vehicle accident diverted to the two vehicle accident, as the one vehicle accident was reported to be under control.

Upon arrival at the two vehicle accident on Highway 28 West, firefighters and rescue personnel found that both vehicles sustained serious damage: a white SUV had extensive damage to the front-end and a black SUV sustained major damage to the passenger's side of the vehicle.

According to reports, the black SUV was pulling out of a driveway when the white SUV rounded a corner and couldn't stop in time to avoid the black SUV, resulting in the collision of the two vehicles.

The driver of the black SUV was said to have been ejected from the vehicle, apparently through one of the side windows, as the windshield was still intact, though this can not be independently confirmed.

The male driver of the black SUV sustained what appeared to be moderate to severe injuries and was transported by EMServ ambulance to South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel for treatment.

The male driver of the white SUV appeared to be uninjured.

Both lanes of Highway 28 West were closed down during initial rescue operations. One lane was soon opened up to allow traffic through until the wrecker service arrived on scene to remove both vehicles from the roadway.

Rescue personnel on scene included Soso, Hebron and Calhoun Volunteer Fire Departments, EMServ Ambulance Service, Jones County Sheriff's Department and Mississippi Highway Patrol.
