HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Hattiesburg Police Department received hands-on experience Monday. Police officers trained at Southern Miss on an active shooter scenario.
Lt. Jon Traxler said, "We want to stay proficient with our training."
The department trains once a year for these types of scenarios to make sure officers are prepared.
Officers used 9 mm paint ball rounds as ammunition. "We would not want to give them just a paint ball gun, it feels different, it reacts different" said Lt. Traxler.
When officers use the specialty handguns it will make it feel real Lt. Traxler said.
He said, "This is the reason we purchase the equipment for this type of training." The entire training teaches police adaptability.
Lt. Traxler added, "To expect the unexpected, to get there and to know what they are able to be looking for."
Each year the scenario is different, but the training and purpose is the same.
"Reassurance that we are here to protect them, we are able to get here and respond to protect our citizens" added Lt. Traxler.
The department will train its officers until Friday.
