FORREST COUNTY, Miss. - Forrest county authorities and the Southern Pines Animal Shelter (SPAS) found 17 boxers and American bulldogs caged in the Macedonia community near Petal Friday.
Forrest county deputies contacted SPAS after they received a phone call about dogs that were not taken care of properly.
SPAS Manager Ginny Sims said the dogs were living in deplorable conditions hidden in the woods.
"Saw signs that there may have been a real struggle, some had scratches, wounds on their body" said Sims.
SPAS officials believe the dogs were being bred for money. Sims said, "This is not the first time that we have responded to this property, there have been dogs seized in this area in the past."
Authorities also said there were animal remains found on the property.
"We do not like to imagine, what would have happened, if we had not been called out" added Sims.
Sims said the dogs are being nursed back to health and should be available for adoption by the end of this week.
SPAS urges citizens to contact police if they witness or have suspicions of animal cruelty in their neighborhood.
"We have to be there voice, we have to speak up, and we are very thankful that someone in this case did" Sims said.
