Mississippi Power Company to Present Initial Filing to Public Service Commission Regarding Kemper Di

JACKSON, Miss. - This is a press release from the Mississippi Public Service Commission Southern District Office.

On October 3rd, the Mississippi Public Service Commission (Commission) will receive Mississippi Power Company’s (MPC) initial filing as part of the Kemper County Power Plant discovery docket process.

To date, the Commission has begun, and is continuing the process of unsealing confidential documents related to Kemper and has published independent monitoring reports on the Commission’s website. This discovery docket marks the next step in a diligent examination of all information involved with the certification of the Kemper facility dating back to 2010.

The discovery docket is intended as a means for interested parties to formally submit relevant questions to and get answers from MPC. The information submitted by and received from MPC should aid in efficiency of a subsequent rate case.

The discovery docket will be broken into three 60-day periods. The first phase is devoted to questions related to the prudence of the Kemper Project costs. The second phase is devoted to questions related to the used and usefulness of the Kemper Project and the conditions imposed by the Commission's Order on Remand. The third phase is devoted to follow-up questions from the first two phases.

Information gathered in the discovery docket may be used in a subsequent prudence determination, but the discovery docket is not preclusive and there will be no rate decision rendered during the discovery docket time frame. There will still be a prudence determination in a separate case in which full discovery will be available.

Any MPC ratepayer has a right to intervene at the Commission and participate in the discovery docket. The procedures are set out in the Commission’s Order opening the case and other applicable rules are available at the Commission’s website.
