Brown Circle, Breast Cancer Awareness

LAUREL, Miss. - The Laurel Housing Authority held its 2nd annual “Breast Cancer Awareness” event at the Brown Circle Homes Friday.

Ailrick Young, Laurel Housing Authority executive director said, "Our event stresses the importance of getting tested so that they can catch the disease in the early stages in order to get treatment and get some care for the disease."

A nurse from the Family Health Center explained why Caucasian women statistically are more prone to have breast cancer.

But, breast cancer has a higher fatality among minorities, due to the lack of regular checkups.

Family Health nurse, Mia Walker said, "I'm hoping that it will touch them to come in and get tested, because it tells you that no one goes untouched. Unless you come in and get your examination done, that's the only for sure answer that you'll know, whether or not you'll have cancer."

After the event, Mayor, Johnny Magee and everyone in the community took a special walk around the park.

"It was symbolic of course, but it was showing the importance of breast cancer awareness. We want our citizens to be around as long as they can, because we need viable citizens in the City of Laurel," said Magee.
