Jones county issues Burn Advisory, dry weather

JONES COUNTY, Miss. - Jones county fire officials issued a burn advisory due to dry weather and low humidity.
Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna said, "Advising residents to consider not burning and holding off until conditions improve." He added, "We are getting to the point where conditions are getting awfully critical to do any type of burning at this point."
A total of 42 counties have issued the burn advisory in Mississippi along with the Mississippi Forestry Commission.
"The amount of precipitation that we have had over the last month or so, things have begin to dry out to that critical point where the spread of a wildfire could be significant" said McKenna.
If you must light a fire officials said to proceed with caution. McKenna added, "If you need to burn trash, put it in a container, do it in the evening, have a hose, shovels, rakes available to you in the vent it will go out."
McKenna said if conditions continue to worse fire officials will take proper steps. "We will request from the board of supervisors that they initiate a burn ban" said McKenna.
"A burn ban goes into place, all burning must stop" added McKenna.
