'Toys for Tots' advocates making a difference on Black Friday
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Its Black Friday and most people are lining up in front of big retail stores hoping to get the hottest deals and best gadgets, but Toys for Tots advocates are hoping to spread a good message.
Toys for Tots officials collected toys Friday morning. The local program would bring 400 gifts to underprivileged kids in Forrest county.
Forrest county Coordinator Janet Baldwin said instead of shopping her and the rest of program's advocates wanted to make a difference. “It’s definitely a time to think about others who don’t have" said Baldwin.
As soon as stores started to open Friday morning Baldwin has been trying to fill up 6 boxes. “We’re hoping to fill many boxes so we’re just asking the community to come out, and support and help us with the gifts for these children" Baldwin said.
One mother made it a point to spend $75 worth of toys hoping it can reach an underprivileged kid this Christmas.
Stacie Moore told FOX 23, "My family is so fortunate and we have been given so much through the years from other people." She added, "So I figured I could give a little for somebody else because its wonderful to see a child smile."
Another Pine Belt mom had no toys to give, but donated $10 after Toys for Tots once helped her family. April Pitts told FOX 23, “I have children, and I have also used the toys for tots program before in the past for them."
Pitts continued, "Something just told me to give, Jesus just told me to give, I could have given five, but I gave ten and I did.”
Baldwin said all she wants to do is a make a difference this holiday season. She added, "If you would just imagine not ever having a gift for yourself... it is very special, and these children really need our support.”
The Forrest county Toys For Tots program will be at the Toys R Us parking lot on Hardy street December 17. The organization will also team up with United Blood Services for those needing blood.
