LAUREL, Miss. - Laurel will be aiming to capture its 2nd MHSAA 5A State Championship in two years Saturday.
Laurel has played phenomenal all season long and will take on West Point in the championship.
The Laurel community couldn't be more excited.
Mayor of Laurel, Johnny Magee said, "The stands are just full on Friday nights. And they support the team. The team knows it and I think that's why they play so hard, because they know that the city is behind them."
"I'm very proud of them because they've worked hard. (Tyquan) Ulmer, the quarterback, he's come in. He stepped up to the plate. He showed he's got skill and talent. All the guys that are on his team, they are strong, dependable, seems like they have good work ethics, and we're very proud of them," said Laurel Police Officer, Sgt. Shannon Caraway.
Mayor Magee predicted this 5A matchup not too long ago.
"I passed through West Point on my way to Tupelo a couple months ago, and I just said then they got a pretty good team, but hopefully we'll meet in the finals. And it looks like it's going to happen. Laurel is going to win at least, 31-28," said Magee.
Chief of Laurel Police, Tyrone Stewart said, "After we win the state championship, it's going to be Christmas before Christmas."
Many fans will be traveling to Starkville to cheer on their Golden Tornadoes. And you can expect to see Mayor Magee and the Laurel Police Department at the game cheering them on too.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Davis Wade Stadium.
