Hattiesburg's behavioral health court
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The City of Hattiesburg received a $180,000 grant a couple of years ago, which is aimed to help misdemeanor offenders who suffer from mental health issues.
The City of Hattiesburg will now conduct its behavioral health court at Hattiesburg Municipal Court.
Mayor of Hattiesburg, Johnny DuPree said, "This is a behavioral court, which makes our community a better place to live. It takes those people that have chronic illnesses or mental illnesses of behavioral problems that they can manage. It's a medical manage issue. They can manage those things either on meds, or counseling, or whatever way they can determine is the best way to manage that. And it keeps them out of the court system. It helps them live a productive life, which helps the next-door neighbor, which helps the children."
