HPD investigating two shootings in the last 48 hours, suspects sought

HATTIESBURG, MS. - The Hattiesburg Police Department (HPD) is currently investigating two separate shootings in the last 48 hours.

The first incident happened Wednesday at 4:25 p.m. Officers responded to an armed robbery with gunshots fired on the 100 block of Mable Street.

HPD's Spokeswoman Lieutenant (Lt.) Latosha Myers-Mitchell said a victim was injured and suspects fled the scene on foot.

The second incident happened Thursday morning at 1:30 a.m. Police responded to shots fired at the 300 block of East Florence Street.

Lt. Mitchell said the suspects fled the scene on foot too. A victim was taken to Forrest General Hospital. Both victims are in stable condition according to Lt. Mitchell.

Chief Anthony Parker said they are adding more units in those areas. “These acts are senseless and will not be tolerated,” said Chief Anthony Parker. “Until the investigations are complete, we are increasing manpower in these areas. Our highest priority remains the safety of our community.”

HPD's Captain Branden McLemore said they are investigating both cases. “At this time, we are asking that all residents in these areas stay aware of their surroundings and to report any suspicious activity,” said Captain Branden McLemore.

The department said they have received several calls of other cases of shots fired around Hattiesburg in the last week.

Residents can report suspicious activity or related information to these incidents to the Detective Division at 601-545-4971 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 601-582-STOP (601-582-7867).
