Hattiesburg hosts 'Night Out Against Crime' senior luncheon

HATTIESBURG, MS. - The city of Hattiesburg is hosting National Night Out Against Crime events the entire week.

Officials hosted a luncheon party for seniors in the community Tuesday at the Police and Fire Academy.

The event is meant to increase awareness about first responders in the community. Residents discuss issues like drug prevention, neighborhood watch, and other anti-crime efforts with city agencies.

Mayor Toby Barker said its a chance for residents to keep an open communication with first responders in the community.

“Our law enforcement does better when they have strong relationships with the neighborhoods" said Mayor Barker.

He added, "That is why we encourage everyone to reach out to their law enforcement when they have questions."

"This whole National Night Out movement from the kick-off last Thursday to the neighborhood parties tonight, this event today, all encourage that.”

This is the 27th year the city has been involved with the national campaign.
