August 8, 2017

JONES COUNTY, MS. - The following is a press release from Jones County Sheriff's Department.

On July 18, 2017, Savannah Knight, 29 of Laurel, was taken into custody after a traffic stop for careless driving and littering.  After consenting to an on-site search of her vehicle, deputies discovered items that are used to manipulate and pass drug screenings.

During this stop, Knight admitted to smoking marijuana. She was arrested for littering and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Knight was transported to the Jones County Adult Detention Center and asked if she had any medical conditions or on any medication, she responded, “no”.  Knight was also specifically asked if she was pregnant, she again responded, “no”. Knight bonded out of jail on July 20, 2017 and it was discovered she gave birth at her home later that evening.

On July 26, 2017, the Jones County Sheriff’s Department received a referral from the Department of Child Protective Services stating they had received a report of child abuse and/or neglect by Knight of her newborn.  She had taken her infant to the Health Department, then ultimately a pediatrician admitted the baby to the hospital. Tests administered to Knight concluded she had used methamphetamine during her last trimester of pregnancy.

Knight was taken into custody on August 7, 2017 and charged with Felony Child Endangerment.

Her bond was set at $5,000.
