HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Hattiesburg Police Department is now accepting applications for the 2018 academy. Applications will be accepted through January, 16, 2018 at 5 p.m.
Applicants who complete the application process will be scheduled to take the civil service exam on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at the Hattiesburg Police & Fire Training Academy (53 Academy Dr.).
“In 1994, I came through this same academy. It’s where I began a storied career serving in every rank and on many special units. Every moment I’ve spent with the Hattiesburg Police Department has provided opportunities for my life I never imagined I would have,” said Assistant Chief Frank Misenhelter. “We want the best of the best to know they can also start their own careers with us, and that they can move forward through the ranks, building their own careers… their own stories.”
Requirements to apply for the 2018 Academy include:
Be at least 21 years of age or older.
Be a United States citizen.
Have a high school diploma or GED. A college degree is preferred.
Be free of any felony or other serious criminal background.
Reside within 10 miles of Hattiesburg city limits or relocate within six months of employment.
Possess a valid driver’s license.
Be a registered voter in his/her current county/city of residence.
Be of good moral character.
All applicants who pass the civil service exam will go through a rigorous background investigation and be required to meet a high standard of physical fitness requirements. The academy is 17-weeks long.
The starting salary for a Hattiesburg Police Officer is between $35,000 and $38,000 per year, depending on education level. All academy recruits will receive a salary of $25,000, and the salary will be adjusted upon graduation.
