DuBard School at USM Celebrates 55 Years

HATTIESBURG, MISS. - The DuBard School for Language Disorders at USM celebrated 55 years Thursday with an open house. The open house welcomed former students and their parents, elected and university officials, as well as the general public. The DuBard School is world renown for its work with children who have severe language and speech disorders, as well as deafness and hearing impairments. "For fifty-five years, we've had the privilege of bringing the gift of oral and written language to our students," DuBard School for Language Disorders' interim director, Miss Schraeder said. "We've have had students over these years with severe problems with communication, speech, language, and hearing loss. So, we have been able to work with them and their families to help them become successful and a lot of that has been due to the leadership of Dr. Martin and so we are happy to celebrate that today. But it's a little bittersweet because she has retired after forty-one years of service." The DuBard school also used the open house as a chance to honor Dr. Maureen Martin and her contributions to the program.
