USM will wear the Spearhead Logo on their Helmet during the Independence Bowl
HATTIESBURG, MISS. - This week USM's athletic department and Camp Shelby military base announced that the USM football team will be wearing the Spearhead logo as a decal on their helmet in the upcoming bowl game, when USM takes on Florida State, Dec. 27. “We actually have a lot in common between those of us who wear the uniform and those who wear the uniform of the University of Southern Miss,” the Commander of the 177th Armored Brigade, Colonel Jack Vantress said. “When we put the uniform on and they put the uniform on, they are part of something bigger than themselves.” USM’s head football coach, Jay Hopson sees it as an honor to wear the Spearhead logo. “We're blessed that those guys were out here,” Hopson said. “The fact that they thought enough of us to come out here and give us the honor to wear the insignia on our helmet is great. We’re thankful for everything they've done, and they are the true heroes in our society.” Vantress also mentioned Camp Shelby’s military is also honored to be a part of the Independence Bowl. “To have this great honor of USM wearing our distinctive unit insignia on the back of their helmet, really speaks to the partnership that is established between our team here at Camp Shelby and the community of Hattiesburg,” Vantress said. Both the USM Golden Eagles and the Camp Shelby soldiers stand strong together with one more mission left to help build on the legacy of USM and its community. “What they do on the 27th of December, when they go out and beat Florida State is building on the legacy of Southern Miss,” Vantress said. “They represent the community, the Pine Belt, and the surrounding areas.”
