City honors the passing of Civil Rights Activist, Peggy Jean Connor
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker has ordered flags lowered to half staff on city buildings and parks in honor of a civil rights icon who passed away this weekend.
Peggy Jean Connor was a Hattiesburg businesswoman who played a key role in the Civil Rights Movement. She was state executive secretary for the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, treasurer of Cofo-Hattiesburg project, and a delegate to the 1964 Democratic National convention.
She worked along side legends such as Fannie Lou Hamer and was one of the few remaining foot soldiers of the Civil Rights Movement.
