MDOT: Ice remains on roads in parts of state, advises motorists to stay off roads in affected areas

(The following is a press release from the Mississippi Department of Transportation.)

JACKSON, MISS.–The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has cleared most major roadways for travel, but crews continue to battle icy road conditions on secondary routes across much of the state. Drivers should use caution, as patches of ice remain in some spots unable to thaw due to shade.

For a list of routes that are impassable due to ice accumulation and all counties with roads affected by winter weather conditions, click HERE.

“MDOT maintenance crews are working to keep all major routes passable for traffic, but there is potential for refreezing to occur tonight,” said Melinda McGrath, P.E., MDOT executive director. “MDOT crews will be monitoring and addressing trouble spots overnight. The public is encouraged to stay off the roads in affected areas unless absolutely necessary tonight and in the morning.”

All major routes in south, southwest and west central Mississippi are passable. Crews are currently slagging bridges and applying salt to icy patches. Some patches of ice are still scattered throughout the area, and drivers are advised to be on alert. Crews will continue monitoring routes for potential refreezing overnight.
