Hattiesburg Convention Commission names Eureka School Cafeteria in honor of Peggy Jean Connor

This is a press release from the Hattiesburg Convention Commission.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — This past Thursday, Jan. 25, the Commissioners of the Hattiesburg Convention Commission passed a resolution to name the Eureka School Cafeteria, the Peggy Jean Gould Conner Hall. A plaque will be installed inside each entrance to display the room name prominently so that her legacy will live on in the school that she loved, and in the community where she played an integral role. “This room was already designated to highlight the role of Mobile Street in the African American History of Hattiesburg. If you have been in the cafeteria, you will know there are two photographs that feature Ms. Peggy Jean’s Beauty Shop. And, so we believe it fitting to honor her in this manner” Executive Director Rick Taylor said. “It was such a delight to see Peggy Jean at almost every Museum event at the USO and every step we were taking with the Eureka School. We will miss Ms. Peggy Jean, but her example and legacy will live on in the Historic Eureka School Museum.” On behalf of the Hattiesburg Convention Commission, we would like to express our condolences to Ms. Peggy Jean Connor’s family and friends.
