Hattiesburg Police Officially Rule Dewey Street Death Investigation a Homicide

HATTIESBURG, MISS. – The Hattiesburg Police Department gave an update Tuesday afternoon concerning the death investigation of 63-year-old Deborah McGee, and they’re now ruling McGee’s death a homicide.  Police found McGee’s body in the 1200 block of Dewey Street at 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, March 25 laying lifeless in her home.

The police department is not releasing any information at this time regarding McGee’s death, and the injuries she suffered.

“On Sunday evening around 14:45 hours, there was a report of a body being found in the residence of the 1200 block of Dewey Street. That investigation and autopsy was conducted today and that investigation has now turned into a homicide investigation,” Capt. Branden McLemore said. “We are not getting into details on how her injuries occurred, but we are seeking the public's help on any information that can assist with the investigation.”

Police do believe an acquaintance killed McGee, as they did not find any signs of a forced entry.

“As of right now, without getting into details of the investigation, we believe it possibly was someone of an acquaintance to her, not a random act… the investigation is ongoing,” McLemore said.  “Without getting detailed into the investigation there were no signs of forced entry.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Hattiesburg police at (601) 544-7900 or Metro Crime Stoppers at (601) 582-7867.
