Water Project Coming to Hattiesburg Soon to Stop Brown Water

HATTIESBURG, MISS. - Some Hattiesburg residents may have noticed brown water running out of their faucet. Wednesday morning, Mayor Toby Barker addressed the issue after conducting a water investigation, saying this came as a result of areas in the city being hooked up to an old water system. Barker says the city will undergo a new project to fix the issue.

“What our water and sewer director and city engineer found is that in part of this neighborhood [Rawls Ave. and West 5th Street]. There was a large enough line, but the houses were still connected to the old line, so part of this project is to fix that,” Barker said. “We expect construction to take four to six weeks. Cost about $100,000, but hopefully, the residents of this neighborhood between fourth and seventh, Gay, and Rawls will see their brown water issue go away or become much less frequent.”

Gay Avenue:

- will connect customers (those who are still connected to old water line) to available 8” or 6" line between 101 Gay Avenue

to 208 Gay Avenue.

- will run a new 6” line between West 6th Avenue and West 7th Avenue.

Rawls Avenue:

- will connect customers (those who are still connected to old water line) to available 8” or 6" line between 107 Rawls Avenue to 300 Rawls Avenue.

- will run a new 6” line between West 5 th Avenue and West 6 th Avenue.

W 5th Street:

- will connect customers (those who are still connected to old water line) to available 8” or 6” line between 303 W 5th Street to 822 W 5th Street.

- will connect customers (those who are still connected to old water line) to available 6” line between 1013 W 5th Street to 1105 W 5th Street.

- will run a new 6” line between Rawls Avenue and Gay Avenue.

- will run a new 6” line from 1013 W 5th Street to 1105 W 5th Street and then South to W 4th Street.

W 6th Street:

- will connect customers (those who are still connected to old water line) to available 8” line between 700 W 6th Street to 708 W 6th Street.

W 7th Street:

- will connect customer (those who are still connected to old water line) to available 6” line at 802 W 7th Street and 903 W 7th Street.

- will run a new 6” line between Rawls Avenue to 60 feet West of Gay Avenue
