Southern Miss student joins New York NBC internship news team

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Pine Belt native and Southern Miss student Amelia Strahan is on her way to the big leagues.

“I’ll be interning at the Weekend Today Show in New York City, I’m really really excited, I’ve been a life long viewer of the Today show and the Weekend Today Show,” said Strahan.

Before she accepted the NYC summer position, she interned here at FOX23. “I feel like I’ve learned a lot of different aspects of just the news in general...like how to conduct an interview, how to set up the camera, really everything A to Z,”

Throughout her semester-long internship in Hattiesburg, Strahan helped reporters shoot, write and edit.

“My very favorite thing I did here was the first package we worked on with the 100-year-old veteran. The congressman was there and just the whole community. That was my favorite project so far,”

She describes her opportunities as divine intervention. “The university has helped me a lot. Everything from the Mass Communications department – specifically Lucky Day, the scholarship program that I am in, they taught us a lot about professional development, resumes, cover letters,” she explained.

She is headed to New York in May, “I just want to learn every facet in the newsroom. There’s so much that they know, that I don’t. So much that I can't even begin to think about. So I just really want to learn from the best in the business and just be a sponge and take in as much as I can learn,”

When she returns from New York she plans to intern with FOX23 again and join the news world after graduation.
