The University of Southern Mississippi names Rusty Keyes, a longtime local crimefighter, as its next chief of police. Keyes will succeed current Chief Bob Hopkins, who is set to retire June 30th after nearly two decades of leading the university's police force.

Keyes brings nearly 30 years of law enforcement experience -- having worked as an HPD patrolman, narcotics officer, street crimes officer, detective, and detectives and patrol supervisor. Keyes, a Southern Miss graduation, joined the Southern Miss police department in 2006 -- working his way up to the current rank of assistant chief in 2017.
