Young "Empowered Princesses" lend helping hands with R3SM

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WHPM-TV)- Young volunteers travel from Waynesboro, Mississippi to the Pine Belt to support R3sm’s mission of helping others in need.

Fox 23’s Jaclyn Coleman talks to the girls on what this experience means to them.

Restore, recover, and rebuild is R3sm’s motto and these girls are picking up a paint brush to get the job done.

“We work with youth along the way as far as volunteering, but we are very thankful and grateful to have them here in the building. Yesterday they worked on a home that was rebuilt in Petal and today they are working on a volunteer home here on bushman street," said Executive Director of R3sm Mavis Creagh.

They’re not your typical princesses, these ladies have no problem getting their hands dirty for a good cause.The Empowered Princesses of Waynesboro is an organization working to teach young ladies life skills, morals, and the importance of giving back.

“As a mother as well, I see a lot of our teenagers feel obligated or feel that the world owes them something so I wanted to teach them and let them know that we should serve others. We should learn how to be servants and put others before ourselves," said Director of Empowered Princesses Marshea Mayfield.

These empowered princesses are trading their crown for a paint brush to help people in need.

“It’s nice doing things for the community you know and knowing that I can give back to the community I live in its really nice to do that,” said volunteer Leah Resh.

Empowered Princess volunteer Makanli Mayfield says you never know when you might find yourself in a tough spot.

“It’s really good to help others because when you need help you would want somebody to help you to," said Mayfield.

Director of empowered princesses Marshea Mayfield says the girls got a chance to put themselves in someone else’s shoes and realize that others don’t have it so easy.

“When they were walking in, just seeing the girls get emotional and one of the young ladies actually said this could happen to me, this could be me being displaced and I want to go in here and give all that I can to help this family move back into this home," said Mayfield.

An organization started in 2006, still stands strong today and attracts volunteers from all over to help individuals in Mississippi rebuild and restore their home from the ground up.
