Swan Song: Who's right about retirees?

Plenty of people are pointing to one of two people trying to overturn the 2016 election and impeach the president -- Nancy Pelosi and Adam Schiff.

A little closer to home, a similar effort is underway -- except this time it's in the Mississippi state legislature and one man deciding election outcomes.

House Speaker Phillip Gunn has told four freshmen Republican representatives who retired from state government that they cannot receive both their state pensions and legislative salaries -- even though the public retirement board and an attorney general’s opinion says its okay.

The change permitted lawmakers to receive their pension and a portion of their salary. But Gunn says the change goes against state law and he’s standing by his decision.

As a result, Jones County Representative Ramona Blackledge is resigning at the end of the month. She served Jones County as tax assessor for years before retiring. The other three in question are retired educators and a county and youth court judge from Lamar County. Their futures are uncertain.

It’s a shame because these folks have a wealth of knowledge and information that could be useful in the Capitol. Just because you are retired doesn’t mean its time to take it to the house -- unless it’s the House of Representatives.
