Fire heavily damages home in Soso

A fire in the Soso community of Jones County late Tuesday night, April 28, heavily damaged a home being rented by two adult females with their four children.

At 10:08 p.m., firefighters from Soso, Calhoun, Hebron, and Pleasant Ridge Volunteer Fire Departments responded to 384 McVey Road. Upon arrival, firefighters found flames shooting from the roof of the home. It was unsure, at the time, whether the four children were still inside the home, so firefighters began an aggressive interior attack, knocking down the flames, and searching the burning home for any occupants. Shortly thereafter, it was determined that the children and their mothers were not at home.

Firefighters remained on scene for several hours performing fire suppression, and overhaul operations.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and the Mississippi State Fire Marshall’s office.

Also, responding to the fire scene were Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna, EMServ Ambulance Service for stand-by, and the American Red Cross to assess the needs of the occupants.
