Hattiesburg, Miss. - The dispute of sewage rates between Petal and Hattiesburg may be coming to an end.
The two cities have agreed to try to settle Petal's claim that their city is being grossly overcharged for sewage treatment.
Petal started using Hattiesburg’s sewage treatment because it had to fill its sewage lagoon before the 1985 flood control project.
Petal sued Hattiesburg in August 2013 after rates increased for a new treatment plant.
However, Hattiesburg officials said Petal residents were paying about a third as much as Hattiesburg residents.
If there's no resolution by January 6th, both Petal and Hattiesburg will return to court in February.
