Southern Miss vs. Old Dominion
Hattiesburg, Miss. - It's senior night here at The Rock as Southern Miss host the Monarchs of Old Dominion. The Monarchs are hoping to get the W so they can become bowl eligible and the Golden Eagles want to win their last home game for their seniors and keep their conference championship aspirations alive.
Senior running back, Jalen Richard said, "When I got here in 2012 and the way that the university and the team has been since then and to be able to say that okay maybe my class started to funk, but to say we brought the legacy that Southern Miss stands for back here in Hattiesburg to have that opportunity is a great feeling."
This wasn't an easy ball game for Southern Miss as Old Dominion brought their a-game. Momentum swung both ways. In the first half, the Golden Eagles struggled a little bit, giving up a couple of turnovers, which enabled Old Dominion to have a 17-14 lead at halftime.
Junior quarterback, Nick Mullens said, "It wouldn't be right if it wasn't hard fought. Coach told us before the game, nothing is given. The finish line is there. It’s right in front of us, but it's not just going to come to us. We got to go chase it, we got to go get it."
In the second half, if I said Southern Miss played well, that would be an understatement. The Golden Eagles played amazing on both sides of the ball, especially on offense as the Golden Eagles scored 42 points in one half. Both, Richard and Smith ran for more than 100 yards each to help the Golden Eagles combine for more than 600 yards of total offense.
Richard said, "To see the guys really focus and dial-in at halftime and coming out and handling what we need to handle and doing what we do best and not straining away from that, ended us with the win."
On senior night, Southern Miss beat Old Dominion 56-31, and don't let that score confuse you, because this game was a dog fight. Now, Southern Miss is gearing up to face LA Tech in their final regular season game as they look to get the W so they can go to a conference championship.
