Southern Miss vs. Charlotte
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss hosted their first conference home game Thursday against Charlotte.
Both teams were looking for their first conference win.
Southern Miss forward, Michael O’Donnell said, "I was feeling pretty good before the game. I knew going into it that I was going to have a good shooting night and I was just trying to go out there and execute the best I can."
O'Donnell started off hot scoring eight points in the first half, with six of those points being from beyond the arc. The first half went well for the Golden Eagles as they were up 36-31 at half time.
But this game was a tale of two halves.
O’Donnell said "we only got six stops in the second half. They capitalized on every rebound and like he said, the big guy just went out there and did what he was supposed to do and just out-competed us."
Southern Miss head coach, Doc Sadler said, "My goodness, they’ve played enough basketball to know that you got to compete every single possession and you know when you get up six in the first half, you can't give a basket up. You can't do it."
The Golden Eagles let the 49ers big man, Joseph Uchebo, score 12 points in the second half as well as giving up a total of 51 points in the second half.
And to make matters worse, Coach Sadler got ejected for reasons he wasn't sure of.
Sadler said "the confusion was we had a 30 second timeout and a full timeout. One official said a 30, the other official gave a full. So there talking, the next thing you know they said okay it's going to be a full. Then I sit down, and then they blow the horn. I mean that was the confusion. Was it a 30 second or was it a full?"
The 49ers beat the Golden Eagles 82-76. But the golden eagles have a chance for redemption as they take on Old Dominion Saturday night.
