New charges filed in the wounding of a Mississippi officer

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Clarkdale police have filed new charges against the two men who they say were involved in the wounding of a Clarksdale police officer and robbery of a grocery store.

Police arrested 19-year-old Johnny Robinson Jr. on charges of attempted murder and two new counts armed robbery. He's being held on $700,000 bond.

A second suspect in the robbery, 20-year-old Leandrew Booker, was arrested Tuesday on an unrelated outstanding warrant from the state Correction Department. He faces additional charges of conspiracy to commit armed robbery and armed robbery.

It was unclear whether the men have attorneys.

Assistant Police Chief Robbie Linley said Wednesday Cpl. Derrick Couch remains in critical condition. Linley said Couch was a bit more responsive Tuesday, but still has a long road ahead of him. He was shot in the left eye Saturday while investigating a convenience store robbery.
