MDOT Reminds Motorists to Use Caution During Severe Weather
JACKSON, MISS. –With severe weather in the forecast for most of the state Tuesday afternoon through midnight, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) would like to warn motorists of the dangers of traveling in severe weather.
The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts possible severe weather starting Tuesday afternoon through midnight through most of the state. Significant severe weather (including strong tornadoes) is possible in southwest parts of the state while severe weather threatens other southern and central areas of Mississippi.
Motorists are encouraged to use caution while traveling in severe weather and to make www.MDOTtraffic.com the starting point for current travel information and road condition alerts. Motorists can also get this information by downloading the MDOT Traffic mobile app in the App Store or Google Play, dialing 511 in Mississippi or by following MDOT on Twitter at www.twitter.com/MississippiDOT.
MDOT also offers these severe weather driving safety tips:
Buckle up.
Drive slowly and carefully.
Allow more space between vehicles.
Brake early to allow plenty of time to stop.
Brake gently to avoid skidding.
Turn on lights to be more visible to other motorists.
Avoid distractions such as cell phone use.
Avoid driving into standing or running water—remember to turn around, don’t drown.
Motorists are encouraged to check the status of road conditions prior to beginning commutes to impacted areas by utilizing MDOT’s aforementioned travel resources.
