Southern Miss loses to 11. Miss St., 13-5

Pearl, Miss. - Nationally ranked Mississippi State scored in six different innings off of nine Southern Miss pitchers to beat the Golden Eagles, 13-5, at Trustmark Park Tuesday night in the only meeting of the season between the two teams.

Southern Miss (19-7) had a three-game winning streak snapped in the contest and also had a string of eight victories against Southeastern Conference foes broken.

Tim Lynch led Southern Miss with three hits, while Dylan Burdeaux and Tracy Hadley added two apiece.

Hadley belted his first homer of the season to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth, becoming the 11th different Golden Eagle to hit a home run in 2016. Chase Scott then singled up the middle to drive home Taylor Braley, who singled earlier in the frame, to give the designated visitors their only lead.

Mississippi State, though, exploded for four runs in the bottom of the inning and collected a total of 18 hits off of nine Southern Miss pitchers, as it was the most surrendered by the Golden Eagles this season. The Bulldogs never trailed again in the contest.

Nathaniel Lowe led the way for the 12th-ranked Bulldogs with four hits and three RBI, while Elih Marrero and Jacob Robson added three hits to pace the Golden Eagle attack.

The Bulldogs took the early lead as Robson opened the game with a triple off the leftfield wall. Jake Mangum then delivered a grounder to the right side that plated Robson and give the home team the 1-0 advantage.

Mississippi State then went on to score one tally in the fifth, twice in both the sixth and seventh frames, before adding more insurance in the eighth with three more runs.

The Golden Eagles scored their only other runs in the seventh. After Storme Cooper was hit by a pitch with one out, Nick Dawson doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Burdeaux then knocked in Cooper with an infield single, while Dawson also scored on the play as the throw from short was wild. Hadley, who made his first start since March 4, then drove in his second run of the game with a single.

MSU reliever Ryan Rigby (3-0) threw 2 2/3 relief to capture the victory for the Bulldogs, while Cody Livingston, the second Golden Eagle hurler, suffered the loss to fall 1-2 as he threw 1 2/3 innings, allowing four runs.

The Golden Eagles return to Conference USA play this weekend when they travel to Charlotte for a three-game weekend set. The two teams play at 5 p.m., CT on Friday, before battling at 1 p.m., on Saturday and 10 a.m., on Sunday.
