HPD nabs local man for child abuse

Hattiesburg, Miss. - Hattiesburg Police responded to a domestic disturbance Thursday that sent one local man to prison.

Hattiesburg Police Officer, Lt. Jon Traxler said, "Around 2:15 yesterday afternoon, Hattiesburg Police was dispatched to 1800 Country Club Road in reference to some type of disturbance. Upon arrival, they found the mother of a child advising that her child had been assaulted by a subject that was left attending the child while she went to the store."

Police said the toddler was rushed to Forrest General Hospital and that they arrested Steven Ted Smith for child abuse.

Traxler said the toddler suffered non-life threatening injuries and is now out of the hospital.
