HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The death of Dee Whigham sparked a community meeting Thursday night to discuss ways to keep similar crimes from happening.

Joshua Generation pastor, Brandiilyne Mangum-Dear said, "We met with several people in our community. We got some real good ideas and solid plans we've made. We're getting ready to start something in about two weeks."

Dear said they will implement a self-defense class and a buddy system that will help protect members of the LGBT community.

But, that's not all.

"We actually want to develop an educational program that we can take into businesses and into our city and different places to help people understand our community a little better," said Dear.

Dear said the main focus will be to try and make a human connection and to bring together all people to help create change.
