LAMAR COUNTY, Miss. - The devastating floods that hit Louisiana caused tens of thousands to evacuate their home.

One local department is doing its part in helping out.

Lamar County Sheriff, Danny Rigel said, "Several of my officers have relatives and friends that live down in Louisiana and they came to us and said 'look, it's terrible down there.' We realized how bad we had it and how it was nice to have somebody come to our assistance after Katrina, and we're just trying to pay it forward."

The department encouraged people to donate non-perishable food items, water, dog and cat food, clothes, and bedding material.

"It's very heart-warming. We live in a great part of the country where people look out for each other. We live in a great community. We're just trying to do what we can," said Rigel.

Deputies will leave Wednesday at 6 a.m. to drive to parishes in Louisiana to pass out the donations.
