LAUREL, Miss. - The Laurel Police Department (LPD) teamed up with the Good Samaritan Center to raise food and money for low-income families before Thanksgiving.

Chief Tyrone Stewart with the LPD said, “This is one of the ways we are serving the community, by helping people that is in need, we are only a couple of weeks from Thanksgiving, and we want to make sure no one in this area is hungry.” The event will take place at Walmart in Laurel on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Executive Director Kathy Clem said, “Right now its getting ready to be Thanksgiving and a lot of people are not able to provide food for their families."

Clem added, "So we are going to be seeing probably about, 100 families a month, but just at the soup kitchen alone, we are going to be doing about 90,000 meals this year.”

Both agencies will also collect everyday toiletries and monetary donations. Chief Stewart said, "The word community, that means everybody, every community together and making something positive happen.”

“The law enforcement folks they are the ones that see in the front lines people that are really needing. They also want to make sure that our pantry is stocked, and so this is why this is just a great collaboration" Clem said.
