Shots fired at HPD officer, suspect in critical condition

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Shots were fired early this afternoon at Hattiesburg police officer.

HPD Spokesman Lt. Jon Traxler said the incident occurred on Old Airport Road at around 1 p.m.

"The police was not injured, but the suspect is in critical condition" said Lt. Traxler.

Police spotted a possible burglary and credit card fraud suspect.

"Officers attempted a traffic stop when the suspect fled on foot" Lt. Traxler said.

According to officials, the suspect then fired shots at the officer. "The officer then returned fire, striking the suspect" said Lt. Traxler.

The suspect was taken to Forrest General Hospital. Authorities said Forrest county DA and Mississippi Bureau of Investigations (MBI) are conducting an investigation.
