One woman loses her home, dog

JONES COUNTY, Miss. - A fully involved house fire in the Sharon community left a woman homeless and took the life of her dog. At around 11 a.m., on Sunday, units from Sharon, Shady Grove and Sandersville Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the scene of the house fire on Sharon Road just North of Sharon Baptist Church. Firefighters arriving on scene found heavy smoke pouring from the windows and roof of the home, as well as flames showing in the garage and living room areas. Firefighters made their initial attack on the garage, as a gas can had caught fire and was burning violently out of control. Firefighters also made entrance into the rear of the home closest to the living room.

Using water suppression and a chemical fire extinguisher, firefighters were able to subdue the burning gas quickly, as well as extinguish the fire raging throughout the home. After the fire had been brought under control, a firefighter with Shady Grove was seen carrying a small dog wrapped in a sheet out of the home to the worried homeowner outside. A medic with EMServ Ambulance Service took the dog to the ambulance and attempted to revive the pet, but unfortunately it was too late. The grieving homeowner held her dog as she watched firefighters perform overhaul on her home. The homeowner then requested to be transported by EMServ ambulance to South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel to be assessed.

Although firefighters were able to quickly bring the fire under control, the home sustained extensive fire, smoke and water damage throughout. Firefighters were on scene performing fire suppression and overhaul for about two hours. One lane of Sharon Road was shut down for emergency vehicles. The cause of the fire is unknown.

Emergency personnel on scene included Sharon, Shady Grove and Sandersville Volunteer Fire Departments, Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna, Jones County Fire Public Information Officer Caleb Worrell and EMServ Ambulance Service. Dixie Electric was also called to the scene.

Fire apparatus included Sharon Engine and Tanker 2; Shady Grove Engine 1 and 2 and Tanker; Sandersville Engine and Tanker.
