Jones county firefighters battle two separate fires

JONES COUNTY, Miss. - This is a press release from the Jones County Volunteer Fire Department.

Firefighters battled two separate fires Saturday, one resulting in a total loss of a structure and the other causing significant damage to a home. Saturday afternoon, Glade and M&M Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the scene of an out-of-control brush fire threatening a home on Glade Dummy Line Road.

When fire units arrived, the brush fire had reached the side of the home and was melting and catching fire in various spots on the vinyl siding. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, preventing further damage to the home. However, it was reported that the home sustained at least $1,000 worth of damage. a resident of the home said he was burning a pile of debris when a gust of wind swept through, causing the fire to spread to nearby brush. The resident attempted to fight the fire but was overcome by smoke, and was transported by relatives to South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel for treatment. The second fire occurred late Saturday night when a man stated that he had been burning wood earlier in the evening. He believed that he had extinguished the fire completely, but due to the overwhelmingly dry conditions, the fire picked back up. The fire spread to his workshop, destroying the metal building; it was considered to be a total loss. Firefighters from Rustin and Sandersville Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the scene of this fire on Pleasant Grove Road and extinguished the fire from what was left of the building. According to Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna, "the wind and low humidity has dried out the vegetation significantly, making controlled burns dangerous." Despite the area burn ban having been lifted, residents are still strongly advised to use extreme caution when performing any type of outside burning and, if at all possible, refrain from doing so until we see more rain in the area. Emergency personnel on fire scene #1 included Glade and M&M Volunteer Fire Departments. Emergency personnel on fire scene #2 included Rustin and Sandersville Volunteer Fire Departments, Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna, Jones County Fire Public Information Officer Caleb Worrell and EMServ Ambulance Service.
