Officials confirm an E-F2 tornado hits Covington county

COVINGTON COUNTY, Miss. - National Weather Service (NWS) officials said it is very likely an E-F2 tornado touched down in Covington county Monday.

“Several of our key damage indicators that we are looking at possible EF-2 damage in Covington County we surveyed a few structures that were heavily damaged" said Meteorologist John More with NWS.

Moore added, "Especially this location (chicken coop) that we are currently at which has led us to believe that."

One of the tornado's hardest hit areas was on Millers Hill which snapped, uprooted trees, and caused a shed to collapse.

Homeowner Terry Miller said no one was on the property during the tornado. “This is my life, I mean this where I grew up and its just kind of heartbreaking" said Miller.

The tornado also took out a chicken coop in Mount Olive, leaving thousands of chickens exposed after the tin roofs flew more than 100 yards across the street.

Covington County Emergency Management Director Greg Sanford said, " We couldn’t ask for anything any better...I guess the warnings and the safety of each individual, payed off for them.”

Sanford said there were no injuries reported.
