H'burg zoo to host first ever Renaissance Festival
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The following is a press release with the Hattiesburg Zoo.
The Hattiesburg Zoo is hosting a Renaissance Festival next Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 18 -19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The public is invited to attend this family-friendly event as the Zoo steps back in time to host a medieval celebration.
The Renaissance Festival will offer several “Ye Olde Attractions,” aimed to please kids of all ages and the young at heart. Fest guests are highly encouraged to dress in medieval clothing. Daily activities include theater performances by Bottom of the Barrel, a knighting ceremony, and raptor shows featuring Hattiesburg Zoo’s hawks and owls.
To be officially knighted during the knighting ceremony, children will participate in three areas of renaissance activities: arts, crafts, and defense. Activity stations include candle making, butter making, horseshoe throwing, archery, and an apothecary table. Stockades will be available for visitors who wish to take photos.
“Hattiesburg Zoo is excited to bring a new and different type of festival that celebrates the Renaissance and highlights medieval dress and activities. This fest will bring new animal education components with the Raptor show and offer hands-on activities in arts and crafts. Our guests will be able to enjoy unique activities during this special celebration,” Jeremy Cumpton, education manager for Hattiesburg Zoo, said.
In addition to the Zoo’s Safari Grill established food and drink selections, smoked turkey legs will also be on the menu. Meade will be available for adult purchase while supplies last.
“Our guests have enjoyed the Zoo’s holiday and special day celebrations, and we believe Renaissance Fest will be a crowd pleaser too. A Renaissance Festival offers a new and unique activity in Hattiesburg, and we believe makes for a great outing for individuals and families to enjoy,” Rick Taylor, executive director of the Hattiesburg Convention and Tourism Commissions, said.
Admission is $5, and children under 2 are free. Tickets can be purchased at the gate the day of the event.
