USM's online Master of Science in Nutrition and Food Systems program ranks top 10 in the country

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Southern Mississippi has earned a No. 8 ranking nationally for its online Master of Science in Nutrition and Food Systems program by GradSource.com.
GradSource.com serves as a destination for prospective master’s and doctoral students, providing comprehensive academic and career information, including program overviews, school rankings and job outlooks.
“As the Department of Nutrition and Food Systems continues to move head-first into the world of online education, we are excited to be ranked among the top 10 nutrition programs nationally,” said Department Chair Dr. Elaine Molaison. “The ranking illustrates the high quality of online education delivered at The University of Southern Mississippi and from the Department of Nutrition and Food Systems.”
The Master of Science degree in Nutrition and Food Systems at USM offers advanced study in nutrition and food systems, focusing on applications in dietetic practice and child nutrition program management. The curriculum offers a choice of emphasis areas, including dietetic practice, child nutrition program management and applied nutrition.
After completing the degree requirements, graduates may be eligible to become a registered dietician or work in one of any number of other nutrition-related occupations such as that of a food service director, health educator or public health official.
To be included in the rankings, all colleges and universities had to meet specific criteria. Each school in the rankings must:
Offer the graduate program in question online
Offer academic and career counseling services
Enroll both full-time and part-time graduate students
Have at least 1 percent of their graduate students enrolled solely in distance education classes
Have awarded at least 1 graduate degree in that subject between 2012 and 2015
Once the list of schools for each subject and degree level had been compiled, GradSource.com ranked them on five criteria, using the weights specified:
Affordability, based on the in-state average tuition for full-time graduate students and the in-state per credit hour charge for part-time graduate students, National Center for Education Statistics, 2015: 30%
Flexibility, based on the ratio of part-time to full-time graduate students and the percentage of graduate students enrolled in any distance education courses, National Center for Education Statistics, 2014: 15%
Program Prominence, based on the percentage of master's degrees that were awarded in the CIP code in question over three academic years, National Center for Education Statistics, 2012-15: 20%
Student Success, based on the ratio of the number of students receiving master's or doctoral degrees to the total number of graduate students enrolled over three academic years, National Center for Education Statistics, 2012-15: 15%
