Southern Miss Art and Design Hosts Open House for Prospective Students

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The following is a press release written by Ashlea Maddox of USM.

The Department of Art and Design at The University of Southern Mississippi rolled out the red carpet for over 50 recruits, along with their families and teachers Friday.

The event was open to prospective first year and transfer students who plan to enroll for the Fall 2017, Spring 2018 and Fall 2018 semesters at Southern Miss.

Students who wish to pursue an education in visual arts at Southern Miss will enjoy tours of the 3D Art Studio, Gallery of Art and Design, and George Hurst Building, home of many of the classroom spaces of the department.

Professor Jennifer Torres, Interim Chair of the Department of Art and Design says that students will have the opportunity to participate in a portfolio competition, where faculty will critique their work. A presentation of the portfolios will immediately follow.

“We host our open house every spring semester and it really is a unique opportunity to showcase our program and facilities to students who want to study drawing, painting, graphic design, sculpting and foundations,” Torres said.

Students can earn an Art B.F.A. or B.A. and/or minor in art, art history, sculpture, drawing and painting, or graphic design and have their work showcase in semi-annual student shows.

“We have over 100 guests, including registrants, teachers and families coming from all over the southeast region of the United States and we look forward to meeting them,” Torres added.

Visiting students will be able to speak to faculty advisors, admissions counselors and financial aid counselors.
